Starting Point – Dedham Village
We began our walk in the historic village of Dedham, a real gem of the Stour Valley. The High Street is lined with lovely Georgian houses, art galleries, and cosy tea rooms. There is convenient parking at the Dedham village car park (On a Sunday cost £2.60 for 4 hours), along with public toilets and several options for food and drink before or after the walk. We started with a takeaway coffee from the Essex Rose Tea Room pictured below

Discover the Dedham Circular Walk

Along this beautiful river, the Dedham circular walk offers tranquil moments.
Along the River Stour
We left the village, on the path follows the River Stour, a stretch famed for its beauty and wildlife (lovely picture below). Expect to see swans, ducks, and, if you’re lucky, kingfishers darting along the banks. The riverside is peaceful, flat, and easy underfoot—perfect for warming up at the start of your walk. Rowing boats and paddleboarders often add to the lively atmosphere, especially on a warm day lit it was when we walked down.

Completing the Dedham circular walk is a rewarding experience.
The Climb to Gun Hill
Eventually you leave the river behind, and the path gradually rises towards Gun Hill. We found the climb quite gentle but enough to get the legs working, and the reward is well worth it: with wide-reaching views across the Stour Valley and Dedham Vale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On clear days, you can see for miles across patchwork fields and woodland. There is a lovely church St Mary’s, Langham at the top of the hill.
The Dedham circular walk continues to impress with its seasonal changes.

As you walk away from from Gun Hill down the side of St Mary’s Church, the route loops back via quiet lanes (see picture below) and field tracks. In the spring the hedgerows burst with blossom, and there is an abundance of wildlife like butterflies and bees in summer. In the autumn colours make this walk especially photogenic. Keep an eye out for skylarks, pheasants, and other farmland wildlife, there’s plenty to see !
